I can't say that I've witnessed that many moving acts of kindness in my life, sugar. Cruelties, petty and not so petty. Sharp and vicious things that tear at you.

Perhaps the family taking me in. Taking Daemon in. Offering us a home, and love. Putting up with our issues and "baggage." (I am learning so many new terms here) But that's no one single act but many over time again and again.

How gentle Lucivar is with Wilhemina. I may have saved her the one time, but I still usually want to strangle her. Perhaps he does, too, but he's gentle with her nonetheless.

Small acts, building a world and a Realm that I haven't seen before, hadn't even dreamed how people could treat each other this well. They each stick out. The simple way Saetan speaks to the Coven. The way the boyos and the Coven interact, all of them taking care of each other.

But beyond all of these is one. A memory of a moment that made me cry of happiness, hope, for the first time in my life.

"Are you Surreal?" Big blue eyes, too large for her face and ridiculous ringlets. I looked at her, surprised she'd know my name. I may have been...her uncle was a client, but he wouldn't have mentioned that at home. Nor would Daemon have brought me up to a child of twelve. Not then. Not willingly.

"I am." I was curious.

"Titian sends her love."

The world dropped out from under me and I would have fallen if Daemon hadn't had his arm around me. I thought she was joking, and glared at him, because only he was capable of that sort of cruelty, but he looked as bewildered as I did. Jaenelle was worried, I was so pale. I could see she thought she'd done something wrong.

I managed to ask for an explanation, fury spiking when she mentioned Hell and demon-dead and harpy...but she knew my family crest. Knew it was Titian's. Daemon didn't know that. He couldn't have coached her.

No one could have told her that but Titian.

No one could have told her the name of the Dea al Mon, my mother's people.

"Titian sends her love." She was so proud to have delivered the message. She smiled at me, lighting up that too sharp face with the beauty she'd grow into.

"Titian sends her love." Three hundred and fifty years without my mother, and her voice, her love, spiraled out through the Dark Realm, through this child, to touch me. To let me know she was still there. Still loving me.

"Titian sends her love." Such a little thing. I managed to tell her...to send mine back before Daemon took her away and I stumbled back to the Red Moon House before I let myself cry in front of all of Challiot.
